Inaugurated in 2009, Propositions was a monthly forum for public research that explores ideas in development. Each two-part seminar explored a topic of current interest or investigation in the invited speaker’s own artistic or intellectual practice. Inspired by the scientific method of hypothesis, research, and synthesis, these developing ideas are presented to the public for discussion, research, and response. Over the course of a seminar session, discursive exploration propelled ideas forward in a unique public forum.
 
Once per month, an invited artist or cultural thinker presented on an idea in process—the “hypothesis”—as the seminar topic. This initial presentation introduced the seminar leader’s current thinking on or preoccupation with a concept or idea as well as unresolved elements or questions that remain. The next day, an “expert” lecture, screening, performance, or activity further explored the idea and presents new perspectives or specific knowledge. In the “synthesis” session that followed, hypothesis, research, and public dialogue converge in an informal working session in the Museum as Hub space.
 
The directed focus invited extensive engagement with a single idea or topic and includes public participation in the development of new concepts.

Propositions was part of the Museum as Hub initiative, a laboratory for art and ideas realized through a partnership of five international arts organizations that included Insa Art Space, Seoul; the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; the Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art, Cairo; and the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. The initiative sought to support art activities and experimentation; explore artistic, curatorial, and institutional practice; and serve as an important resource for the public to learn about contemporary art from around the world.
