Alexander Nagel is the author of Michelangelo and the Reform of Art and Anachronic Renaissance. He is recognized for his research into Renaissance concepts of history, which he developed during a two-year stint as Andrew Mellon Professor at the National Gallery’s Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Art. In 2008, he was appointed Professor of Renaissance Art History at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York. His current research interests include: the temporal life of artworks (i.e., antiquarianism, anachronism, archaism, citation, embedding, and forgery); Renaissance art and the Eastern Mediterranean; the emergence of a conception of Europe; the history of the altarpiece and the origins of easel painting; and classifications and reclassifications of art in early modern art theory, art history, and art collecting. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Fine Arts at Harvard University.
