No, No, No, No!
September 11 – November 8 1987
Two color monitors placed in the window played one of Nauman’s most recent videos, that of a clown jumping up and down shouting ‘No, No, No, No!’ endlessly. Nauman’s videos confront the viewer with behavior normally thought unacceptable. Nauman takes an emotionally loaded, simple definite statement, “no!,” and deprives it of force by endless repetition. Because the character and situation are not necessarily funny, we move from laughing at their stupidity or clumsiness to identifying with it. Of course, there’s no one interpretation of these pieces that’s definitive; Nauman has deliberately structured his work to provide myriad possibilities both in terms of presentation and response.
