Trigger: Tschabalala Self
My name is Tschabalala Self.
In this selection of works I explore the iconographic significance of various gendered personas and characters within my practice. In Mista and Mrs. the male figures chest is both a support and boundary. In Floor Dance, the hyperbolic female figure demands attention and space and is transformed through her movement. In Mane, the sitting male figure stands erect, despite his passive positioning. In all works included in this selection, my characters subvert the viewers expectation through their agency and physical autonomy. In my most recent work, Wild Blue Cherry, the figure is conflated with a tropical fantasy soda bottle. She becomes what she consumes; a lesson which should be held as truth with all those who engage with objects and the objectified.
