Tom Hatch: Body, Mind and Machine
January 29 – March 18 1984
In his window installation, Tom Hatch used both the two-dimensional window plane and the shallow space behind it, combining a painting on the window’s glass with painted glass or plexiglass constructions, to create an ambiguous relationship between real and illusory space. The three-part work was titled Body, Mind and Machine, and according to the artist, represented a metaphoric travelog of man’s expansion of his mind through and exploration of outer space. Two glass panels were painted with abstract shapes and vivid colors to corresponding to “Body” and “Mind,” while a painted form in the window’s spandrel, the “Machine,” was the space vehicle that facilitated man’s journey.
