Have You Attacked America Today?
December 8 1989 – February 4 1990
Parodying the aggressive look and techniques of advertising, Rothenberg created an ironic sense of false optimism in this piece to convey unsettling messages about contemporary American attitudes toward dissent and freedom of expression. The installation uses seemingly patriotic sloganeering to critique America’s political and social agenda. Several ‘do-it-yourself’ flag-burning kits and a satirically rewritten national anthem added further bite to Rothenberg’s work, provoking vandalism on two separate occasions.
