Kristin Jones and Andrew Ginzel: Triptych
September 26 – November 30 1986
For their installation, entitled Triptych, Jones and Ginzel integrated the three section format of the Broadway window into their plan. The installation represented a self-contained universe with references to the earth’s natural forces and elements. Jones’s and Ginzel’s triptych panorama portrayed three divided realms.
On the left was pandemonium, with dust storms and whirling spheres. In contrast, the right portion was calm. The floor was a landscape of white powder, a scale weighed mounds of white pigment against black, and suspended above the scene, a slowly turning gold hoop gathered momentum until it appeared as a sphere. The triptych was completed by a brilliantly lit hemisphere which radiated light to the scenes below.
Juxtaposed by its placement in perhaps one of the most commercial areas of urban New York, the installation was at once mysterious and accessible, provoking a sense of awe, appreciation and awareness of the surrounding phenomena that make up our environment and that the artists felt were almost extinct in the urban milieu of the 1980s.
