Leslie Sharpe
June 21 – August 10 1986
From June 21 to  August 10, 1986, as part of the On View program, the New Museum presented an installation piece by Leslie Sharpe in the the Window on Mercer.

In response to a particular series of outdoor advertisements displayed throughout New York City, Leslie Sharpe presented a group of large photomontages which deconstructed the meaning of the original advertising campaign. In front of these photomontages, the artist staged window graphics and mannequins.

Aspects of production, display, consumption, and advertising were all put under glass in Sharpe’s investigation of basic advertising strategies. In particular, her work focused on such interrelated economic and political themes as the representation of money, the displacement of women, and the masking of racial repression.
