In July 2019, the New Museum hosted a special panel discussion featured scholars and experts in Latin American art, feminism, and media ecology who presented three innovative new interpretations of the history and significance of Marta Minujín’s La Menesunda1. Since its first installation at the Center for Visual Arts at the Instituto Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires in 1965, La Menesunda at the time was only recreated twice, one of which was at the New Museum, “Matrta Minujín’s: Menesunda Reloaded”. Taking advantage of this unique opportunity, the scholars gathered together for the program brought their expertise to bear on “Menesunda Reloaded” and provided exciting new interpretations of Minujín’s radical immersive installation and performance work.

This panel featured Dr. Deborah Cullen, Executive Director of the Bronx Museum of the Arts; Dr. Michaëla de Lacaze Mohrmann, Andrew W. Mellon Museum Research Consortium Fellow at the Museum of Modern Art; and Aimé Iglesias Lukin, PhD Candidate in Art History at Rutgers University and author of the exhibition catalogue essay “MINUYORK: Marta Minujín in the USA.” Their presentations on the history and significance of La Menesunda in relationship to gender, capitalism, and transnational exchange in Latin American art was followed by a discussion moderated by Massimiliano Gioni, the New Museum’s Edlis Neeson Artistic Director and co-curator of “Menesunda Reloaded”.
