New Museum First Saturdays for Families: Lynda Benglis

March 5 2011

Explore this first museum retrospective of the seminal American sculptor Lynda Benglis. Benglis’s interest in process led her to expand the possibilities of a range of materials. Most recently, she has experimented with plastics, cast glass, paper, and gold leaf. Continuing to take the body and landscape as primary references, Benglis’s latest sculptures still have great immediacy and physicality, and sometimes even appear to defy gravity.

Inspired by works such as Phantom (1971), a room-sized polyurethane sculptural grouping consisting of five enormous reliefs, and The Three Graces (2003), a group of striking glass sculptures that takes its name from Greek mythology, families are invited to participate in a hands-on workshop, twisting, dripping, and pulling sculptural materials into new works of art.

Museum First Saturdays for Families are free of charge. This program is designed and recommended for families with children four to fifteen years old, and includes free New Museum admission for up to two adults per family. Children under eighteen are always admitted free. No preregistration is required. Space is limited and tickets are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Your entire party must be present; tickets will not be given to partial parties.
