Time on the Bowery: 1982 - 2008

Geraldine Scalia has lived in the neighborhood since 1982. Over the years her work has morphed from object making to room installations and back to working flat. In whatever form or genre she works, she shifts the viewer from spectator to participant. Her work - whether it be parlour, cabin or painted canvas is experiential, with a very personal emotional nuance. One of her most memorable pieces, HOLIDAY TABLE subjects the spectator to the discomfort of witnessing a festively set table being devoured by flames. Scalia is currently interested in the manipulation of the picture plane, and is painting and drawing in various media. Although still occasionally involved in 3-dimensional form, she is primarily focused on painting at this time.
