Keren Cytter utilizes the fragmented and self-conscious narrative techniques pioneered by luminaries of postmodern literature like Julio Corta¡zar, and French New Wave film directors like Jean Luc Godard to weave dreamlike narratives dealing with desire, loneliness, jealousy, betrayal, and murder. In Cytter’s universe, time doubles back on itself, language skips and mutates, characters become confused or disappear entirely, and fantasy bleeds into reality. In her film Der Spiegel (The Mirror) (2007), a middle-aged woman is forced to confront the realities of her fading sexual attractiveness by a sadistic pair of younger women. Made with only a handheld digital camera, a small group of the artist’s friends, and a set that consists of an almost empty room, Der Spiegel (The Mirror) is a drama that is at once quotidian and frighteningly otherworldly.
