Donald Moffett was a founding member of the collective Gran Fury, which created work in the late 1980s and early 1990s addressing issues related to AIDS. At first overtly political and often employing text, Moffett’s own work includes textured monochromatic paintings, sometimes combined with video projections and sculptural elements, and austere paintings featuring Minimalist spheres and zippers that “repair” cuts to the canvas. In 2007, Dan Fox wrote in Frieze magazine, “…for Moffett, painting is used as a kind of aesthetic compressor concentrating the very real concerns and complexities of identity politics and human sexuality into a hard-hitting, high-tension visual experience.”

The subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions across the United States and in Europe, Moffett’s next major exhibition is a large traveling survey of his work that will originate at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh in 2010, and will culminate at the Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) in Houston in 2012. HIPPIE SHIT, Moffett’s 2005 installation at Marianne Boesky Gallery, will be re-presented in Berlin at the Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst (NGBK) in 2009. Moffett was a Resident Artist at Skowhegan in 2004.
