Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba: Memorial Project Vietnam
May 7 – July 29 2003
The Zenith Media Lounge will feature two videos, one which is being shown for the first time, by Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, one of the most celebrated young media artists working in Asia today. Born on Tokyo, educated in the U.S., and living in Vietnam, Nquyen-Hatsushiba first gained international attention in 2001 for the startling video Memorial Project Nha Trang, Vietnam: Towards the Complex - For the Courageous, the Curious and the Cowards. In this mesmerizing work, Vietnamese cyclos (rickshaw taxis) are pulled soundlessly across the floor of the sea in slow motion by a group of fisherman, evoking the arduous recovery of a people after a half-century of political turmoil. In the brand-new Happy New Year - Memorial Project Vietnam II, a traditional New Year’s dragon puppet twists and turns beneath the waves, while a voice-over recalls the tragic role this holiday played in the devastating Tet Offensive of 1968.
