Nothing Endures: John Salvest
March 19 – May 31 1998
This mixed-media artist (b. 1955, Kearny, N.J) creates architectural site works using unique business cards that he has collected over the past few years. Arranged in a grid, the 10-foot by 18-foot work was installed in the New Museum’s second-floor stairwell. Resembling a mosaic on which the phrase “Nothing Endures” is clearly spelled out through the contrasting colors of the more than 4,000 cards, the work comments wryly on the universal human wish to be remembered and its parallels to the artist’s creative quest.
