In 2013, the New Museum presented Cory Arcangel's The AUDMCRS Collection of Recorded Sound as part of its First Look online exhibition series.
From 2011–12, Cory Arcangel’s Brooklyn studio archived 839 trance and underground LPs that had been purchased from legendary DJ Joshua Ryan. The AUDMCRS Underground Dance Music Collection of Recorded Sound is a public archive of these LPs, presenting all relevant data (i.e., format, size, speed, generation) on each record with an accompanying image of the album’s cover art. The project underlines the personal obsession often involved with collecting, as well as Arcangel’s own interest in preserving a cultural history that relates to his work and life.
AUDMCRS consists of two parts: the website, presented by the New Museum as part of First Look, and the vinyl record collection, which toured multiple venues beginning in 2012, including the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh; DHC/ART Foundation, Montreal, Quebec; Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Herning, Denmark; Reykjavik Art Museum, Reykjavik, Iceland; and Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Pantin, France. Touring venues and dates were also referenced on the AUDMCRS website home page.1
Established in 2012 and co-organized by the New Museum and Rhizome, First Look is a digital art commissioning and exhibition program representing the breadth of art online—from interactive documentary, to custom-built participatory applications, to moving image-based works, and art for mobile VR. Encompassing a substantial array of work that continues to expand, First Look explores the formal, social, and aesthetic possibilities of emerging technologies on the web.
