Events: Heresies Collective
June 11 – July 20 1983

From June 11 to July 20, 1983, as part of the exhibition “Events: En Foco, Heresies Collective,” the New Museum presented an installation of works curated by Heresies Collective. In keeping with the exhibition format of the Events series, the New Museum reversed standard museum procedure by asking this feminist collective to organize and present their own exhibition, thereby relinquishing curatorial control over its gallery space and the publication of the accompanying catalogue.

Heresies Collective (1977 - 1993) was a group of women who published Heresies: A Journal of Feminist Art & Politics. This periodical was the result of a collaborative process that drew upon the talents and theoretical insights of women working across a variety of fields. Each issue was edited and designed by a different group of women, and the resulting product represented years of work toward a definitive statement on topics from sexual politics to racism, to theater, film, architecture, or music.

For their installation Classified: Big Pages by the Heresies Collective, the group rendered, on six-by-eight foot pages in a walk-around installation, the editorial vision of the women who published the issue “Mothers, Mags and Movie Stars: Feminism and Class.” This installation explored media representations of motherhood and provided an alternate perspective via stories and images of real-life moms.
