Sustained Visions

This exhibition focused on paintings, drawings, and sculpture by three artists who maintained a consistent, idiosyncratic vision over a long period of time. Gaylen Hansen, Claire Moore, and Salvatore Scarpitta were at the time of the exhibition already mature artists of considerable reputation who had worked in isolation — either geographically or esthetically — for most of their careers. Rather than attempting a radical break from tradition or trying to establish a new formal vocabulary, each artist drew extensively form personal visual sources as well as from art history, adhering to their own impulses and intentions rather than to the dictates of taste or fashion. There was a certainty and a lack of equivocation in their work which made it unique and distinctly unselfconscious.
