William Copley: The Tomb of the Unknown Whore
April 12 – June 12 1986
Part of the On View program, CPLY (William Copley) mounted a major installation in the New Museum’s WorkSpace gallery. An extremely ambitious project, The Tomb of the Unknown Whore took over the entire room, transforming the space into a CPLY-esque bordello filled with his innovative, erotic imagery. In this installation, CPLY moved beyond the traditional viewer-art relationship by creating an experience which completely engaged the senses. The viewer was cast into the absolute sensuality of CPLY’s world, where a wide spectrum of questions and issues were raised.
