The Invented Landscape
February 17 – April 14 1979
“The Invented Landscape” was an exhibition of the work by ten photographers who explored alternatives to the traditional landscape photography. Rather than stressing the primacy of the natural scene, the work in this exhibition emphasized the actions of the artist. It was a new, synthetic landscape that was presented — rather than a response to a pre-existing piece of nature — from highly manipulated prints incorporating drawing and hand-applied color, to unaltered images that were non-traditional only through their distortions of conceptual categories. This exhibition of experimental landscape photography was organized for The New Museum by Christopher English, a Chicago photo-historian.
