For her installation, presented as part of the On View program, Barbara Ess constructed a stereo project which constituted both a literal and a metaphorical interpretation of the Doppler Effect. This scientific principle distinguishes the symmetrical rise and fall in pitch as sound approaches and moves away from an observer. In Ess’s installation work, sound “moved” across the space between poles established by two haunting photographs (The Beast’s Feet and Limbo), creating a disturbing sense of passage from one state of existence to another.
